Work Work? More Work?

Posted by vampire at 04:05 PM on December 5, 2003.

Started my first week of work. It is not industrial training anymore. Although it is in the same company, and basically, I do the same thing as I did last year, it's not the same. Last year, I kept saying to myself, keep it going... It's only a while more till I get back to uni life. Well, I went through the training, and happily made full use of my 8 months of uni life after that. Now it is impossible for me to think that way again.

Well, work has its benefits. Now, I am earning my own money, supporting myself, and being independent. I do not need to use my parents' money anymore.

Today is Friday, 5th day at work. My supervisor had gone to China for a business trip this week, and he did not give me a job to do before he left. So, for five days, I sat here and do almost nothing. I have my own PC, but with no modem. I am using Chin's modem right now, and my own TM Net account.

Last year, they had ISDN, but had discontinued the service after Telekom overcharged them, that's what I was told. So now, to get online, I will have to use a modem to dialup traditionally. This sux. One of my only joys during industrial training was to get online all the time, and download stuff. Luckily I have Streamyx at home now.

Bing & TTH will be arriving in Penang for a weekend holiday in approximately 2 more hours. Will be picking them up after work. Plans include going nightspots (maybe Bing's karaoke), Batu Ferrighi, PC Fair (I need to buy a set of speakers and wireless keyboard), eating places (assam laksa, pasembur, char kuey tiaw, etc).

I'm looking forward to watching LOTR: Return of the King. Anyone wanna watch with me? Contact me if you do. I plan to book the tickets early~!

My New Computer

Posted by vampire at 05:17 PM on December 5, 2003.

I just had my tea-break. Almost without fail, at 10.30am and 4.30pm, I break for tea. 12.30pm is my lunch break. Almost all the time, my colleagues will order chap fan from outside, and order for almost everyone.

There's this website which caters for us Industrial Zone workers in Penang. http://www.eatatwork.com. Kinda cool! They ordered from there on Wednesday. They have lotsa items in the menu, including Japanese and Indonesian food.

I just bought my PC. Here are the specs:

Intel Pentium 4 2.60GHz HyperThreading FSB 800MHz
Asus P4P800 Motherboard (Support Dual Channel Memory, USB 2.0, Serial ATA)
2x 256MB PC3200 DDR RAM
GeXcube ATI Radeon 9600
80MB Maxtor 7200rpm (8MB)
Asus 16x DVD-Rom
Lite-On 52x32x52x CD-Writer
SB Live! DE 5.1
D-Link Network Card
1.44MB Floppy Drive
ATX Casing with Blue lights at the front, But not as 'beng' as Jaycylenne's

All the above costed me Rm2827. Penang's prices about 10-15% more expensive than KL's. No monitor, no mouse, no keyboard, no speakers. PC Fair this weekend, going to get myself a wireless keyboard and an 'okay' set of speakers. I'll be using Chin's monitor till I get down to Malacca to retrieve mine.

I bought it on Wednesday, after work, but didn't manage to assemble it till Thursday night. So today (Friday), I brought the whole thing to work (cos I don have anything to do yet), with the intention of installing and configuring everything. I brought all the equipment, components, screws, jumpers, cables, installers, manuals, but alas, I forgotten to bring one of the most important things - the Windows XP installer. So, my efforts are wasted. All I could do was configure the BIOS, and partition & format my hard disk drive. Wanna ask you ppl - NTFS or FAT32 file system is better? Cos I formatted mine to NTFS.

Deep Thoughts which shouldn't be Thought Of

Posted by vampire at 08:35 PM on December 13, 2003.

I just realized, and was pointed out to me by someone quite some time back, that I am starting to sound like Eugene... hmm... Correct indeed. I donno why... I can't help it. Someone commented on Friendster that I always complain. Well, come to think of it, that's true. I know I have a good life actually - Uni education, high-paying job, supportive family, etc. I must start to appreciate this.

I am still not moving on. I can't accept working life yet. Work's fine, I reckon. I can cope with what they throw at me, I think, after what I've been thru in uni. It's the time insufficiency! My work hours are 8.30am to 6pm. With traffic jams and dinner and shower, it'll be around 8pm. Then I gotta sleep early for the next day. This is in total opposite to my uni life of 10 hrs of sleep per day, and my saying of "Everyday is a holiday", sadly doesn't apply anymore. I spend too much time enjoying in uni till I hadn't really prepared myself for this new phase of life.

I hope for a change in my life~! This feels so much like during Industrial Training which I dreaded, the difference being it's permanent now!

I come to realize that my worst fear is loneliness. Take away my money, Take all luxury away, Take my car away, but don't let me live alone!

Work Work + LOTR

Posted by vampire at 04:02 PM on December 19, 2003.

Today I complete my third week of my work. I sort of started working when I my supervisor came back from China on the second week. Finally, I was introduced around. Even though I did my training here for 3 months, and had sat here for 1 week before that, I didn't really know the names of most ppl here.

I am in charge of a Light/LED Tester. Last week, I played around with the Stepper motors, and Spectrometers, and Light Detectors. I am quite happy that I am still sorta doing something relating with what I studied in uni. Optics is closely related to Telecommunications. I did technician's work of fabricating wires and cables for connecting to tester, but later confirmed that the tester wasn't appropriate, and had to send it back for redesign. So, I'm bored again.

Today, my supervisor left for China again. This time it's two weeks. Nothing to do. Luckily I got my modem today. I had returned Chin's modem when she went back last week. Now learning to programme XML in VB. Back to writing programmes. Boring looking at the monitor all day. I prefer walking around, playing with equipment.

I watched LOTR: The Two Towers DVD (Special Extended Edition) last night till 1am. It consists of 4 DVDs - 2 for the movie, 2 for the special features. It was 4 hours long. I had to stop for supper in between that. Great movie with lotsa nice (some important) extended scenes. Too bad they had to cut that out for the Cinema version. This time, the LOTR3: Return of the King is 3hrs 20mins in cinemas, and the papers report he cut out approximately 1hr from the original. I have to wait another year for that Extended version to be out. Going to watch LOTR3 with my colleagues on Saturday. Most prob will come out of the cineplex only at 3am... Hehe...

Boyd will be going to Langkawi on Sunday morning... Hope I can meet him up when his plane arrives in Penang.
